Best Time to Visit Svalbard: Month-by-Month Guide (Midnight Sun, Polar Night, Aurora)

Svalbard does not have four seasons so much as three worlds: the polar night, the snowy spring of returning light, and the endless day of the midnight sun. Each one opens different activities — so the best time to visit Svalbard depends entirely on what you want to do.

Svalbard month by month

January

Deep polar night, cold, clear skies bring the best aurora nights. Short snowmobile and northern lights tours; Polarjazz festival at the end of the month or early February.

February

Blue twilight at midday, sun back above the horizon from mid-month (but hidden by mountains in town). Very cold; long snowmobile tours restart.

March

The Sun Festival (around 8 March) celebrates the first sunbeams on town. Peak snowmobile season starts; still dark enough for aurora in the evening.

April

Light returns fast, the midnight sun begins around 20 April. Great month for expeditions, ice caves and dog sledding. Busy — book early.

May

24-hour daylight, snow still on the mountains, the last snowmobile tours and returning birds. Transitional month for boats.

June

Snowmelt, bird colonies fill up, cruise season opens. Some fjord ice remains, which can mean polar bears on cruises.

July

Warmest month (around +7°C), peak season for boat tours to Pyramiden and glaciers, hikes and expedition cruises.

August

Least sea ice, best chance to circumnavigate Spitsbergen, walruses and whales. The midnight sun ends around 23 August.

September

Nights return, the first northern lights appear, the last boat trips run. Quiet and good value.

October

Rapidly darkening; the sun sets for the season late in the month. Dark Season Blues festival. Few tours, but auroras.

November–December

Polar night, Christmas lights, aurora tours, starlit snowmobile rides.
