This is the question everyone asks. Honest answer: on a day tour, rarely. Polar bears follow the sea ice, which in summer lies far to the north and east of Longyearbyen. Summer means 24-hour daylight until late August, open fjords and the full boat programme: short scenic cruises in Isfjorden, full-day trips to Pyramiden or Barentsburg, and private charters.
